IRIS brings together around a Sustainability research agenda the thinking and reflection of researchers of different cultural and disciplinary orientations, in the effort to promote the widest and most multi-faceted approach, putting into relationship different sciences and fields of inquiry. Behind this interdisciplinary approach lies an analysis of Sustainability as a complex and controversial topic, requiring a broad outlook and a wider range of tools, encompassing both linear and systemic methods of inquiry. By means of its ability to approach problems from a multiplicity of very different points of view, IRIS is thus in a position to elaborate research procedures in which contradictions, diverging assumptions and spurious conclusions are valued and included. This is because a dialectics between different forms of knowledge is effective in expressing the complex nature of social, natural, economic and cultural systems, which are indeed some of the sub-components constituting the theme of Sustainability.
